Where did the forecast go?

Hey guys…I know most of you already know where to find the forecasts now that they are over on Solspot.com…our new, much more powerful site.

But just in case some of you new visitors googled in…I wanted to make sure that you can find all of the new cool stuff. This blog isn’t updating the forecast anymore, all of that has been pushed over to the new site. Here are a few of the links that will hopefully help you find some waves (and hopefully good conditions too.)

For those of you that just wanted the forecast without any of the bells and whistles…The same ol’ Socal Forecast can be found here (this is the normal forecast for all of Southern California and generally gives you all the info you need to find surf for the next day)

Here is the link to my long-range forecasts where you can find all the details you need to plan your surf sessions for the next several days, and some even longer range outlooks that can give you a heads up on incoming swells.

Since the Southern California coastline is all jacked up (uh I mean unique)…we took the forecast and broke it down into a bunch of different “zones” that help to show how much swell, what sort of wind, and how the tides are going to affect the different regions.

WNW-NW swell and local WNW windswell (280-300) will be on the rise on Tuesday...conditions look sloppy too thanks to the winds setting up the windswell. There may be a few semi-protected spots here and there but expect them to be smaller since they won’t be as exposed to the windswell.

Most spots will be in the knee-waist high range with some inconsistent chest high sets on the lower tides. Standouts will have some chest-shoulder high+ waves with a few bigger sets by the end of the day.

W winds are supposed to get an early jump on things…starting off around 10-12 knots for the morning and then quickly building into the 12-20 knot range by the afternoon. Patchy fog and cooler air temps will also be on tap throughout the day.

New WNW-NW swell (285-300 with the prime portion of the swell coming in 290-300) will be filling in throughout the day. Some of the energy will already be on the rise in the morning but it will be getting bigger as the swell builds and the tide drops off.

For the morning look for most exposed spots to be in the knee-waist high range with some chest high+ sets showing at the top NW spots. Shape will be a bit swampy thanks to the high morning tide. By the afternoon the average spots will be more in the waist-chest high range while the standouts see some shoulder high sets. The local wind and windswell will also be on the rise by the afternoon…so while we get some bigger sets shape will start to get pretty hacked up.

Winds will be fairly light in the morning...with a little bit of a N-NW tint to it...not enough to junk it up but still enough to get some texture on the exposed spots. WNW-NW winds around 13-15+ knots will be on tap for the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell (280-300) that came up on Friday will hold into Saturday morning and then slowly fade through the day…and continue to fade through Sunday. Weather and winds will be nice…hopefully enough of the surf will hold on so that we get to enjoy them.

Saturday look for the average breaks to hold in the knee-waist high range with some inconsistent chest high sets showing as the tide drops through the morning. Top spots will be in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent shoulder high sets showing after we get around the tide.

Winds will be NE 10-15 knots on Saturday morning…then turn onshore out of the W-WNW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

Sunday will be smaller…mostly knee high surf at the average spots and some waist high+ sets at the standouts. Look for the tide to really swamp things out in the morning but there should be enough swell in the water to find a micro-line to ride once it drops later in the day.

Winds on Sunday will be good…NE around 10-knots for the morning and then W winds around 10-12 knots by the afternoon. Sunny skies and warm beach temps at the more sheltered areas.

The surf continues to increase as new WNW-NW swell (280-300) and local WNW-NW windswell fill in a bit more. The high tide might be a bit too much for many spots early in the morning but things could be pretty playful as it starts to even out.

Look for most spots to hold in the waist-chest high range on the sets…with a few bigger waves mixing in on the lower tides. The best spots, with the steeper NW exposure, will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some inconsistent head high sets on the lower tides.

It looks like winds will be pretty steady/strong just a ways out to sea…but the nearshore stuff should be a bit cleaner than what we saw on Thursday. Look for variable N-NW winds around 5-10 knots for the morning (more northerly than anything right around sunrise)...so look for the cleanest conditions at spots that have a little more protection from those directions. The winds will shift more WNW-NW around 10-20 knots for the afternoon.

Wave heights come up a bit on Thursday as a mix of building NW swell (290-300) and NW windswell fill in throughout the day. Unfortunately conditions don’t look great since the wind comes right along with the windswell.

Most spots will be in the knee-waist high range with some inconsistent bigger sets pushing in on the afternoon tide push. Standout WNW-NW facing spots will be in the waist-chest high range with some bigger shoulder high+ sets showing by late in the day.

Winds will be out of the W-WNW around 10-knots for the morning and then will increase 15-25 knots+ by the afternoon.

On Saturday we will see mostly leftover WNW-NW energy…sort of mix of the steeper NW swell from earlier in the week and some of the local windswell that has brewed up the last couple of days. Most spots will be on the small side with surf in the ankle-knee high range with some inconsistent knee-waist high sets. The standout NW facing spots…mostly in south county…will have some more waist-chest high waves showing on the lower tides.

Sunday a new WNW-NW swell (285-300) fills in and wave heights come up slightly…but mostly the “push” and the consistency of the surf will improve. We can still expect a lot of spots to be in the knee-waist high range while the standouts see waist-chest high surf and some occasional bigger sets that sneak in.

Both days look pretty clean during the mornings. Expect light and variable winds for most spots and a few areas with some very light offshore flow. It looks like we will be fighting a bit of a marine layer…maybe even some patchy fog…so don’t be surprised if visibility isn’t always that good. The winds should stay on the light side through the afternoons on both Saturday and Sunday…but expect the sea-breeze to develop enough to driving some variable 10-12 knot onshore flow into the more exposed spots.

The WNW-NW energy backs off a touch on Friday but still manages to send some playful waves into the well exposed spots. Look for average breaks to hold around knee-waist high while the standout NW facing spots, mostly the beach breaks, see some chest high+ sets.

Look for light/variable to light offshore winds in the morning with some stronger gusts near passes and Canyons. Winds stay pretty light through the afternoon…expect variable onshore flow around 10 knots for most areas.

The WNW-NW swell turns a little more westerly and the swell periods shorten up on Thursday…both of which are good things for SB spots. There still isn’t a bunch of energy sneaking in but there are some occasional fun sets showing at the really NW exposed spots.

Expect most spots to see surf in the knee-waist high range with a couple rare waist-chest high+ sets. A few of the best NW exposed spots, mostly in south county, will have some inconsistent shoulder high sets.

Look for mostly light and variable winds in the morning with some pockets of light offshore winds in a few spots. These winds will hold through mid-morning but then turn westerly around lunch and will eventually peak around 10-15+ knots by late afternoon. Look for cooler beach temps, with some overcast skies and possibly even some fog at times.

Look for really clean, nearly flat, leftover surf on Wednesday. Yeah there are 2 new swells in the water but neither of them will be able to push much (any) energy into SB. Most of our surf will be from leftover local windswell and with the winds going mostly offshore the weak swell will be dropping fast.

Expect most spots to see surf in the flat-ankle high range with a couple rare knee high sets. A few of the best NW exposed spots will be more in the ankle-knee high range with some inconsistent waist high+ range.

Winds and weather look pretty nice again on Wednesday. Mostly sunny skies with some light/variable to light offshore winds on tap for the morning. Variable onshore winds around the 10-14 knot range will develop through the afternoon.

Saturday look for mostly small, tide swamped, surf in the morning. Most spots will be in the ankle-knee high range with some waist high sets at the standouts. W-NW winds will get a jump on things pretty early so expect sloppier conditions moving in by midmorning and just getting worse as we head into the afternoon.

Sunday conditions clean up, though we will still have some tide issues in the morning. We will also see some new WNW-NW swell (285-300) mixing in with the new windswell (and a touch of S-SW swell that filters into the really exposed spots). Wave heights will build into the knee-waist high range for most of the exposed spots and chest-high+ sets at the standouts down in South County. Winds will start off light offshore and then shift variable onshore around 10-13 knots for the afternoon.

Just some NW windswell leftovers and some background WNW-NW swell on tap for Friday. Look for nearly flat conditions for the morning as we shuffle through the high AM tide. As the tide drops most spots can expect surf in the ankle-knee high range with a few inconsistent waist high sets showing at the top WNW-NW windswell spots.

Look for NE winds around 10 knots for the morning with the potential for some 15 knot gusts near the wind-prone passes and canyons. Those winds shift to the W-NW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

The NW windswell fades fast on Thursday but the weaker WNW-NW energy sort of lingers on as the other drops off. Most spots can expect surf in the knee high range with a few inconsistent waist high sets showing at the top WNW-NW windswell spots.

Look for NE winds around 10-15 knots for the morning with the potential for some 20-25 knot gusts near the wind-prone passes and canyons. Those winds shift to the W-NW around 10-20 knots for the afternoon.

Choppy NW windswell and weak WNW-NW energy will be on tap for Tuesday. Mostly small and steep NW windswell on tap for the morning, most of which will pretty much slip past Santa Barbara. Look for some ankle-knee high surf for the morning with a few waist high+ sets at the standouts down near the Ventura county line. The windswell does blip up a bit through the afternoon but expect pretty sloppy conditions to go along with it.

Some lighter almost semi-variable conditions setting up along the coast early in the morning but shifting WNW-NW’erly very shortly after sunrise. Expect some residule bump on pretty much everything except the most protected breaks. WNW-NW winds 15-25 knots move in through the afternoon.

Saturday looks fun but small…just leftover WNW-NW swell and some shadowed SW/NW swell. Most spots will be in the knee-high range…with some knee-waist high+ sets at the best standout breaks. Light and variable winds for the morning and then stormy S-SW winds 10-20 knots and increasing rain for the afternoon.

Sunday will be a little funky…still some rain and storm on tap for the morning but overall it looks like light/variable winds for most of the region. The surf doesn’t really shift up all that much but there may be a touch more local windswell helping to add a few inches at the well exposed spots.

The swell will be dropping on Thursday but the shorter swell periods on the tail end of this WNW-NW pulse will help more energy sneak into Santa Barbara. Unfortunately the swell direction is still a little steep so expect to find the biggest waves down in the southern parts of the county and progressively smaller surf as you move north/west.

Sizewise we can expect surf in the chest-shoulder high range at the better WNW facing spots and some head high sets sneaking into the better NW facing breaks through the morning low-tide. Look for less size and consistency for the afternoon.

Winds will be NW around 10-15 knots for the morning, which doesn’t totally blow out everything…I wouldn’t spend a lot of time looking for waves but it could be worth checking those little protected nuggets in the morning. NW winds 15-20 knots will move in through the afternoon.

Saturday starts of slow and breezy thanks to the new storm front pushing through the region and most leftover swell in the water through the early part of the day. Really it will probably be a better morning to surf the pillow for a little longer. Expect S-SW winds 10-15 knots with some 20-25 knot gusts and more rain/thunderstorms and other nonsense.

By Saturday afternoon a new W-NW swell (275-300) starts to arrive and come up fast…though conditions still look pretty crappy. I expect that the average spots will be in the shoulder-head high+ range by the end of the day…standout NW facing spots will have more consistent overhead and overhead+ sets.

Sunday the W-NW’er will peak and winds will back down shifting more to the WNW-NW and holding around 10-15 knots for the morning. The surf will be solid in the head high to overhead+ range for most of the average spots and sets going a few feet overhead and bigger at the WNW-NW facing standouts. The tide is still pretty high in the morning but there will be a lot of energy rolling around and it will have a good shot at breaking through the extra water. Even with the winds there should be enough waves and swell that the more protected breaks will work and will probably be cleaner since they don’t have as much exposure to the wind and chunkiness of the swell.

The WNW-NW swell (280-300) and weaker SW swell (190-220) will hold into Friday…and the swell periods will shorten up which will help the swell to get a little deeper into Santa Barbara proper.

Look for surf in the chest-shoulder high range for most of the average spots. Standout South County breaks will be in the chest-head high range with some inconsistent overhead sets sneaking in on the lower tides.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300 with fairly long-periods, which isn’t the greatest for SB) fills in and peaks on Thursday along with a touch of SW swell that holds in the background (and is mostly shadowed). Look for most exposed spots to be in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent chest-head high sets showing at the well exposed NW spots down in South County.

Weather doesn’t look great…WNW-NW-N winds are expected to develop late on Wednesday and will possibly hold over into Thursday morning. At this point it looks like we will see some WNW-N winds around 10-15 knots in the morning and then some 15-20 knot gusts arriving through the afternoon. Hopefully the winds will be bit more Northerly through the morning so that most of the SB spots stay fairly clean. Don’t drive a ton tomorrow if the winds look bad, but keep an eye on things and see if we can dodge the wind bullet in the morning.

Not a lot of changes on tap for Wednesday. Our surf will continue to be a mix of leftover WNW-NW energy. Expect surf in the knee-waist high range for most of the exposed spots…standout spots will be in the waist-chest high range. Best shape will be at the points/reefs but the swell mix is small enough that there will be a few playful sections at the beach breaks as well. If conditions don’t totally fall apart it looks like there may be a few new WNW lines sneaking in by the end of the day…the periods are pretty long so you will want to stick close to Ventura…but it would be worth keeping an eye on things if the winds don’t get too bad.

Clean conditions on tap for the morning with mostly light offshore winds for the county and a few pockets of light and variable flow at the more protected spots. Look for SW-W winds around 15-20 knots by the afternoon. Increasing clouds and a chance for rain late in the day.

New W storm swells moves in overnight and peaks on Saturday before slowly fading on Sunday. Winds and weather will come along with it…but we might see semi-surfable conditions in some areas early on Saturday.

At this point look for surf in the chest-head high range for most of the “average” W facing breaks. Standout W-WNW facing spots will be in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets going a couple of feet overhead at times.

Saturday morning winds are forecast to be semi-onshore…but the models aren’t really all that certain. There is a chance that we will have S-SE winds early in the morning, so there may be a few pockets of cleaner conditions at the protected spots. Look for W winds 10-20+ knots to develop by Saturday afternoon and hold through most of Sunday. It will be raining both days.

The W-NW swell (275-300) will start to peak on Saturday and hold overnight into Sunday. Unfortunately a lot of the incoming energy is a bit too NW’erly for most of the breaks in Santa Barbara…and the swell periods (at least on Saturday) will have the energy bending away from many spots as well.

On Saturday look for average spots to hold around the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets showing on the lower tides. The top NW spots, mostly through South County, will be in the shoulder-head high range, with some inconsistent overhead sets showing at times.

By Sunday the swell will have turned a little more westerly and the periods will have shortened up both of which are good for the region. (Look for Sunday/Monday to be better SB surf days). Average spots will see the surf push into the shoulder-head high range on the sets while the standout breaks see overhead+ sets showing on the lower tides.

Look for N-NE winds around 10-15 knots for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Afternoon winds will turn onshore out of the WNW around 10-13 knots, but may stay manageable at the protected spots.

New W-NW swell will be filling in throughout the day…unfortunately the swell periods are going to be pretty long at first which doesn’t really let the energy wrap into Santa Barbara properly. There will be some new size but not the full blast of what will be hitting Ventura. Look for many spots to be in the knee-chest high range through the morning with some shoulder high+ sets showing at the best WNW-NW facing breaks through the South Half of the County. Look for the sets to become more consistent through the end of the day…but expect much more size showing on Saturday and Sunday as the swell fills in and the periods start to back down a bit.

Saturday will see new W-WNW swell filling in through the morning…pretty mixed up and hacked up thanks to S-SE winds but building in size nonetheless. Look for average spots to build into the chest-head high range with some overhead sets showing at the top spots by the afternoon.

Saturday winds and weather are looking a bit stormy with S-SE winds 10-15 knots showing across the county for the morning and then gusts hitting up around 20-25+ knots for the afternoon. Expect rain and possibly thunderstorms pushing throughout the day.

Sunday we will have some more WNW-NW swell fill into the mix…building on top of the steady W-WNW storm swell. Look for average spots to be in the shoulder-overhead+ range while the standout exposed breaks, mostly through South County, see some sets hitting a couple of feet overhead at times. Shape won’t be great thanks to the mixing lumpy swells and building WNW winds…but there may be a couple of pockets hiding out at the really protected breaks.

Sunday winds shift more to the WNW around 10-15 knots for the morning and gusts nearing 20-knots for the afternoon. Drier conditions overall but not much in the way of clean surf thanks to the new, lamer, wind direction.

WNW-NW swell fills in more on Saturday…but will have to suffer through another large morning high tide. Spots that can handle the tide will have surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets sneaking through at times. As the tide drops, and the swell gets a little bigger, look for the average exposed breaks to build into the shoulder-head high range with some bigger overhead sets showing occasionally. Winds look ok…light but sort of NW-NNW in the morning, and then more WNW 10-15+ knots for the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell will hold similar sizes into Sunday but expect the swell to show a bit more at spots further north than then did on Saturday…expect a bit of a slowdown through the morning as we see yet another solid morning high tide. The WNW-NW swell drops off a bit more on Friday…and the morning 7’ high tide pretty much puts the surf in a coma. Saturday actually looks semi-surfable for this area…winds are forecast to go a little more NNW’erly in the morning which means a lot of spots will have at least some protection from the winds, particularly some of the points. There will be plenty of surf on tap as well thanks to the W swell holding into the morning. Look for a lot of spots to run in the shoulder-overhead range while the top W-WNW facing spots see sets going a couple of feet overhead. The water quality won’t be good but the change in the winds and the sort-of fading swell energy (at least the windswell portion of it) will help to groom things out a bit.

Sunday looks much cleaner with more NE-N winds on tap for the morning and light winds holding through the afternoon. The surf drops a bit…still lots of chest-head high waves at the average W facing breaks. Standout WNW-NW spots, mostly through south county, will be in shoulder-overhead range on the sets.

W-WNW swell will peak on Friday…though conditions don’t look particularly appetizing. Granted a lot is going to depend on how fast this last storm front moves through the area but at this point it looks like SW winds around 15-20 knots and more rain on tap for the morning. The winds eventually shift more W’erly by the afternoon but that won’t really help things that much. If the front stalls out we could see more SE flow in the morning which could at least set up some potential for cleaner surf at a handful of protected breaks.

Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the overhead+ range with a few bigger well overhead sets mixing in. The standout WNW-NW facing spots down in the south half of the county will be more in the well-overhead range with consistent double-overhead+ sets mixing in at times.

Overall don’t expect much in the way of surfable shape, even at the very protected areas…but if you are willing to brave the poor water quality, and potentially hazardous surf, you might spend a few minutes checking out spots that can handle the mix of wind/weather/swell.

More storm and more swell continue to pummel us on Thursday. W-WNW swell and junky stormswell will hit exposed areas pretty hard…continuing to push in large sloppy surf and poor conditions. Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the overhead+ range with a few bigger well overhead sets mixing in. The standout WNW-NW facing spots down in the south half of the county will be more in the well-overhead range with consistent double-overhead+ sets mixing in at times. Don’t expect much in the way of surfable shape…even at the very protected areas.

S winds, possibly even some SSE winds at times, and rain will be on tap for Thursday…look for winds around 15-25+ knots with gusts around 35-40 knots. Severe weather warnings, flash flood warnings, and all sorts of fun stuff will likely continue to be in effect throughout the day…fortunately it looks like the weather will start to break by the weekend. We just have to last till then…

Almost a repeat of Tuesday but with a stronger storm and more swell. W-WNW swell continues to push through the exposed areas driving up the surf, and as it combines with the wind, generally making it pretty ugly out there. If you are absolutely going to surf no matter what…try to concentrate on areas that have some protection from the S-SE winds and can groom out the W-WNW swell mix.

Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the overhead range with a few bigger well overhead sets mixing in. The standout WNW-NW facing spots down in the south half of the county will be more in the well-overhead range with some near double-overhead sets mixing in at times.

S-SE winds and rain will be on tap for the morning, winds holding around 15-25+ knots for the early part of the day. Look for more S-SSW’erly flow by the late afternoon and winds increasing into the 20-25+ knot range…so most spots will be pretty torn up by then. Even more rain and thunderstorms are expected to hold through Wednesday night.

More W swell and rain moving in on Tuesday. Look for building surf at most of the W facing beaches, but poor water quality to go along with it.

Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the shoulder-overhead range with a few bigger sets mixing in. The standout WNW-NW facing spots down in the south half of the county will be more in the head high to overhead+ range with a few sets going a couple of feet overhead and bigger by the end of the day.

S-SE winds and rain will be on tap for the morning, winds holding around 10-15+ knots for the early part of the day. Look for more S-SSW’erly flow by the late afternoon and winds increasing into the 20-25+ knot range…so most spots will be pretty torn up by then. Even though the swell is dropping a little bit overall…Santa Barbara likes both the swell direction and the swell period so we can expect some fun surf for part of the weekend. The only part that (pardon the pun) blows is the approaching storm that is set to start driving up S-SE winds on Sunday, probably bringing in some early rain as well. Overall if you can…try and surf Saturday or early Sunday…if you lag too much you may miss the window.

Sizewise both days look pretty similar…lots of surf in the chest-shoulder high range at the average breaks with some shoulder-head high, and maybe even overhead surf showing at the well exposed standouts. Points and Reefs will have the best shape…particularly the points since they like the swell-periods that are in the 10-14 second range.

Weatherwise look for light and variable winds through early Saturday and only marginal onshore flow for the afternoon. Sunday will start out with light/variable winds as well but S-SSE winds and increasingly cloudy skies will move in through the afternoon. Rain will be coming as well but it looks like heavy stuff will start after sundown.

The swell will be fading on Friday but I don’t think it is going to drop too much…if anything Santa Barbara should almost be a little better than it was on Thursday thanks to the shorter swell-periods having an easier time making into the exposed areas. With winds going offshore/side-offshore for many breaks and staying nice through the day you should have plenty of time to grab a few.

Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the chest-shoulder high range with a few head high sets (maybe a touch bigger on the lower tides). The standout WNW-NW facing spots down in the south half of the county will be more in the chest-head high range with more consistent overhead sets showing at times.

Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. It will be pretty chilly in the morning but hopefully it will warm up through the middle of the day. Look for light and variable winds through the afternoon…likely keeping things pretty surfable throughout the day.

More solid surf on tap for Thursday but it looks like local winds will be a bit of a pain in the ass…and we have yet another morning high tide to punch through as well. Winds will be out the NW around 10-15+ knots for the morning with some gusts up to about 20+ knots at the really open spots. The wind direction isn’t a completely horrible one for Santa Barbara…there will still be some protected spots, both from the wind and the swell, if you hunt around you will be able to find something to ride.

Sizewise look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the shoulder-head high range with sets going a couple of feet overhead. Standout WNW facing spots will continue to be in the head high to a couple of feet overhead range…with some well overhead waves sneaking in as well.

The winds are set to improve by the end of the day…gradually shifting to the N or even NNE by the evening, so keep an eye on conditions…there is a chance for some clean-up around sunset. Hope you guys get a few…stay safe!

Looking pretty solid for Wednesday…the new swell will be filling in fast through the morning, likely moving into its peak around lunchtime (since SB is further NW than the other regions). Swell periods will be a bit long at first so expect a little shiftiness and inconsistency at some breaks (particularly some of the point breaks). Still as the swell builds and the periods shorten up size and consistency will improve.

Look for most of the average W facing breaks to hold in the shoulder-head high range with sets going a couple of feet overhead. Standout WNW facing spots, that like longer-periods, will be in the head high to a couple of feet overhead range…with some well overhead waves sneaking in as well. It will be a race between the dropping tide and the increasing wind…I would try and stick to spots that can handle a little extra water.

Light and variable to slightly offshore/sideshore winds set up clean conditions for the morning. Some scattered drizzle and WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots move in through the afternoon.

A bit smaller on Tuesday as the W-WNW swell fades and bit and the swell direct turns to a little more shadowed WNW direction. Still there will be plenty of fun rideable waves for the exposed spots.

Average breaks will be in the waist-shoulder high range…while the standout spots see some shoulder-head high sets pushing in on the better parts of the tide swing. Shape will be best at the points…with the reefs coming in a close second. The beach breaks will be a bit lined up but you might be able to find some rideable shoulders if there is something to break up the swell.

Winds look good for the morning, mostly light and variable to light offshore for most spots. NW-NNW winds move in later in the day but stay around the manageable 8-10 knot range.

Shape will be best at the points and reefs…expect pretty walled up shape at the beach breaks.

Winds look good with light offshore flow on tap for the morning…maybe even moderately offshore near some of the passes and canyons. Look for the winds to increase and shift a little more onshore through the afternoon before possibly laying down again near the sunset.

Lots of waves on tap for the weekend…the swell direction and the equally important swell period are both pretty good for SB, which means that most spots will be working in some fashion. Points and reefs are going to have the best shape, but the crowd factor is going to be pretty high, so if you are looking a little extra room you might have to get creative picking your spot.

On Saturday look for the average and/or more sheltered areas to see surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some occasional bigger sets mixing in. The more exposed areas in South County will see surf in the shoulder-head high range with some overhead sets showing at times. Top spots will have more consistent shoulder-overhead sizes.

Sunday the swell increases pushing average spots into the shoulder-head high+ range. The better exposed areas see waves in the head high to a couple of feet overhead and the top spots will likely for a few feet overhead on the biggest sets.

Winds look good for both days…light/moderate offshore E winds for the mornings and mostly variable slightly side/onshore for the afternoons. Some of the more protected spots may stay close to clean throughout the day. Look for the morning offshore flow to back down slightly on Sunday.

Slow start in the morning…even with the first part of the new W-WNW’er starting to show. The swell periods are pretty long in the initial energy from that swell, which means that the energy is either wrapped back towards Point Conception or is shifted down into Ventura County. Still there will be a little short/medium period energy out of the WNW that will put a few longboardable lines into the top breaks.

Expect surf to be mostly in the ankle high range with a few knee high sections here and there. Top WNW facing spots will be around waist high on the sets. By the afternoon the swell will fill in a bit more…nothing huge (yet)…but it should be good enough for waist-chest high waves at the average spots and a few chest-shoulder high+ sets at the standouts.

Winds look good for the morning…moderate offshore out of the ENE in the 10-15 knot range. Look for WNW winds around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon…getting a little breezy at the more wide open spots with no protection.

There is a little swell showing out there this afternoon and it looks like it will get a little better as it fills in a touch more overnight and into Wednesday. It won’t be great by any means but the combo of clean morning conditions and lower AM tides will help out the shape a bit. Expect most spots to be in the knee high range with some waist and even chest high sets sneaking into the better WNW facing breaks across the southern parts of the County. Try and get on it early if you can…the tide will fill in fast and the swell starts to lose a little energy by midday.

Winds look good…mostly light to moderately offshore in the morning blowing out of the E around 10-15 knots. Look for those winds to shift more Northerly and stick around the 10-15 knot range for the afternoon.

SB looks like it will have a few fun ones tomorrow for the dawn patrol…the combo of new swell and the low AM tide will set up some rideable lines. It won’t be huge…lots of knee-waist high waves on tap for most of the points/reefs. A few of the better south/east county spots will be more in the waist-chest high range but I wouldn’t expect much more than that. Top spots will be the breaks that like the swell to be a little steeper WNW direction and like the medium/short-period energy that will be pushing through.

There will still be a few fun waves in Santa Barbara tomorrow…though it will be a little smaller and less punchy than the weekend. The WNW swell mix is shifting energy a little more NW’erly which puts SB into more of a shadow…that being said there is still enough westerly swell that most of the South Half of the county will have some knee-waist high waves…while the top spots near Ventura see some waist-chest high sets and maybe a few bigger waves on the morning tide push.

Santa Barbara Surf Forecast – Wednesday – Shadowed Leftovers

The Swell
Wednesday will see a smaller shadowed version of the WNW swell (280-290) which will basically be a mix of the leftover energy from the weekend and some marginal energy from a steeper NW swell. Small SW swell will also hold in the background.

Waves
Looks like small surf on tap for Wednesday. Most spots will be in the knee-high range while the best long-period NW breaks and the well exposed combo spots, mostly near the Ventura County line, will be in the knee-waist high range…maybe a few waist high+ sets will show inconsistently throughout the day.

Santa Barbara Surf Forecast – The Weekend – Plenty of waves

The Swell
Saturday starts off with some new WNW-NW swell (280-300) starting to show early in the day but not getting a ton of new size on the beach for the morning. The WNW-NW builds in through Saturday afternoon and peaks throughout the day on Sunday. Small, much less consistent, SW energy (200-220) holds in the background.

Waves

Look for mostly smaller waves…lots of knee-waist high sets at the average spots early in the morning on Saturday. A few of the top breaks will see some chest high sets…and maybe a little more size as the first part of the new WNW-NW swell starts to arrive. This energy will fill in through the day and push waist-chest high+ surf in the average spots and some chest-head high sets at the standout breaks.

Sunday the WNW-NW peaks and we can expect consistent chest-shoulder high surf at the average exposed spots and some shoulder-head high+ waves during the bigger sets at the standout NW facing spots.

Winds
Mostly light winds Saturday morning but starting to increase out of the NW pretty early. Look for NW winds 10-14 knots by midmorning and gusts hitting 20 knots by the afternoon.

Sunday the winds will be light and variable to N-NE around 10-12 knots…depending on how exposed your spots are. Look for the usual onshore afternoon winds out of the NW 10-15 knots.

I expect most spots to hold around knee high for the dawn patrol…maybe a few knee-waist high mushballs at the standout spots.

By the afternoon the average WNW-NW facing spots will be in the waist-chest high range while the standout spots, mostly towards the south end of the county, will have some shoulder-head high sets…particularly on the lower tide.

Winds
Light N-NW winds early…mostly below 10-knots for the morning. Building NW winds 10-20+ knots will be on tap through the afternoon. One thing keeping an eye on…there might be a chance at improving winds close to sundown…one of the weather models thinks some N winds may crop up around the sundowner time…so cross your fingers, you might be able to score a few as the swell comes up.

The Swell
Steeply angled WNW-NW windswell will build into Santa Barbara on Saturday and then fade out slowly on Sunday.

Waves
Mostly small surf will be on tap over the weekend…look for some knee high or smaller waves at the average spots on Saturday along with some sloppy conditions as NW winds continue to push through the area. Top spots will be bigger, more in the knee-waist high+ range, but will likely be junkier thanks to more wind exposure.

Sunday the wave heights stay the same through the morning (but may mush out thanks to the early morning 6.5’ high tide)…conditions will be cleaner. Fading surf and switching onshore winds will be on tap through the afternoon.

Winds
Saturday look for NW winds 10-15 knots for the morning and NW winds 10-20+ knots on tap for the afternoon. Sunday will start off cleaner with variable N winds around 10-15 knots but the NW flow 10-15+ knots will return by the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell (285-300+) that hit over the weekend will be fading out and turning a little more NW’erly in swell direction on Monday. Smaller local windswell will continue to hang in the background.

The standout WNW-NW exposed spots, particularly as you get closer to Ventura, will be a little bigger and more consistent with surf in the waist-chest high range though I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few larger sets through the morning low tide.

Santa Barbara Surf Forecast – Weekend Waves – New NW swell peaks

The Swell
Saturday will start off with a mix of WNW energy (285-295) from the little pulse of swell that pushed in on Friday. The new NW swell (285-300) will begin wrapping into the area as we move through the day…the swell periods are initially pretty long (over 16-seconds) so the swell won’t show a ton of new size around SB proper...but we will have a few new waves showing at the top spots.

Sunday the NW’er (285-300+) will peak and bring more of the energy in the short-medium period bands, which has a much easier time making it to the Santa Barbara beaches…unfortunately the swell direction is pretty NW, so don’t expect a ton of size.

Waves
Saturday will see surf in the knee-waist high range for the average WNW-NW facing spots…and some chest high sets at the standout breaks through the morning. The building NW swell will start to increase size at the top spots by the afternoon and it looks like there should be some shoulder high+ sets showing before sundown.

Sunday the average spots will be in the waist-chest high range while the standout NW facing breaks will see more consistent chest-shoulder high waves…along with a few bigger shoulder-head high sets at the best breaks. Look for the biggest size through the morning and then a gradual fade as we head towards the end of the day.

Winds
Saturday will see N winds in the 10 knot range for the morning with some stronger gusts near the passes and canyons that end at the beach. Look for NW winds around 10-15 knots by the afternoon.

Sunday will be cleaner with NE winds around 10-14 knots for the morning. Winds shift around to the W-WSW by the afternoon but stay on the lighter side…it may stay rideable (not clean) through the afternoon but still expect some bump.

Santa Barbara Surf Forecast – A little more energy and maybe some texture

The Swell
New short-medium period WNW-NW energy (290-300) starts to push through on Friday…the main part of the energy is coming through around 290-300 but there is a little component, mostly of local windswell, that is coming through a little more westerly…right around 275-285…which is a much better angle for spots around SB.

Waves
Sizewise, since the swell is a little bigger and better angled, we can expect a few rideable waves starting to sneak in on the lower tides. Overall the average spots will be in the knee-high to knee-high+ range. Standout breaks, as you move closer to Ventura, will be in the knee-waist high range. It will feel mostly like weak/gutless windswell lines, but hey it is something to ride.

Winds
Winds may be an issue…looks like there is a chance at some funky westerly flow that could spin up for the morning. Generally winds should be light/variable, particularly if your spot has some protection but watch for that morning bump. NW winds around 10-15 knots will build through by the afternoon.

All swell activity will back down on Thursday…expect very weak local windswell and trace NW energy to filter through the best exposed beaches.

Waves
Unfortunately with the last of the swell dropping off, and the major tide peak still pushing through midmorning, we can expect flat conditions for most of the aveage-good spots. Standout breaks may see some ankle high lines on the lower tides but overall even those spots will not be very surfable.

Winds
Winds will be light, under 10-knots, in the morning with a slight E-SE flow to them. Conditions look the cleanest as you move down closer to Ventura. Expect building southerly winds…anywhere from ESE to SSW around 10-14 knots as a new cold front tries to spin through Socal later in the day.

Santa Barbara Surf Forecast – Waves for Wednesday

The Swell
Santa Barbara will see a mix of heavily shadowed NW swell (290-300) and a weak local W-WNW windswell coming out of the channel.

Waves
Look for surf in the ankle-knee high range for most of the well exposed spots, mostly through South (East) County. Other lesser exposed spots will be flat or close to it. The high tide peak that rolls through around 9:30 will swamp out shape across the whole region.

Overall, since most of our semi-rideable surf is coming through as local windswell, shape is going to be soft and slow, even on the lower tides. Plan on sticking to the big boards.

Winds
Look for light and variable conditions early…but with a touch of onshore flow picking up by midmorning. Generally it will be clean but with a couple of pockets of texture building in at the really wind exposed areas. W-NW winds 10-15 knots build in through the afternoon.
